WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA… Due to its popularity, Fern House chose golf as the sport of choice for its 16th Annual Sports Brunch at the Palm Beach Yacht Club and Marina in West Palm Beach April 18th, 2009.

Special Guest, former PGA Pro Peter Newton related how he began playing as a child with his golf-loving parents, getting tips from other golfers on how to improve his game. There were issues in his family, and one day it dawned on him that his parents were alcoholics. Golf helped him escape the unhappiness of his home life. He was so good at it he became a Pro, and on the PGA tours garnered six winnings – however, purses in his day weren’t like the million-plus winnings of today. After winning one tourney his purse was a wheelbarrow full of silver dollars!

The next speaker was an attorney, whom Executive Director Pat McGreevy and House Manager Bernard Willis managed to get out of jail where they met him, and then had him Remanded to the Fern House. Jail was bad, but he thought Fern House and its disciplined programs were worse and Bernard was a "Hitler!" One night he was having so much trouble Bernard sat him down and did his "Dutch uncle" counseling that went on for hours. Suddenly, Bernard became a friend and mentor, guiding him through the program (that requires each client to obtain employment) to his Graduation. Then life became like a Country Western song in reverse: he had his profession back, his relationship with his family back, even his credit back! His talk was so powerful there were tears seen running down the faces of guests. It was another "Fern House miracle."

There was laughter as well at the enjoyable "Ties Prohibited" Brunch with the gourmet menu from Palm Beach Yacht Club, guests’ Goody Bags, Table Prizes, and the whooping big Door Prize won by Judi Pancione.

The benefit was Chaired by Lavinia Baker, Dr. Fredric Barr (who also served as Emcee) and Fred Meltzer. Co-Chairmen were Barbara Pond and Ron Flavin. Credit goes to Auction Chairman Barbara Katz, Auction Co-Chairman Ed Capuano (also a Sponsor through his Stevens Companies) and Auctioneer Stan Crooks, along with Sponsors Palm Beach Yacht Club and Grand Bank and Trust for the huge success of the gala Sports Brunch.
